Reporting from NIC 2012: Planetary scientists have been analysing stellar dust found in primitive meteorites for around 25 years now. Among the most analysed grains are the SiC grains, which are characterised by their Si, C and N isotope ratios. … Continue reading

Good news, everyone! The *long* anticipated first episode of the Earth and Solar System group’s new podcast, The Cosmic Cast, is here! Relax as hosts Ricci Bahia, John Pernet-Fisher and Tom Harvey take you on a fun, cosmic journey through the wonderful world of planetary science, stopping for chats with some of the most interesting researchers in the field! Find the first episode on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-224464017/the-cosmic-cast-1?in=user-224464017/sets/the-cosmic-cast and YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQgLcLYIUL8&t=11s And more platforms to come! #geologyrocks #planetary #planetaryscience #space #spacerocks #podcast #science #research #geology #chemistryDr Sarah Crowther and 1st year PhD student, Marissa Lo, speaking to Year 8 students about the wide range of opportunities that come from doing Physics at A Level 👩🏼🔬👩🏿💻👩🏽🚀 . According to the IOP (Institute of Physics), only 20% of A Level Physics students are female, and there has been little improvement to this for the past 25 years. We hope that networking events like this will address the gender imbalance and make sure that women are represented more in Physics! Thanks to Bernadette Motiwala from Urmston Grammar for these photos and for organising the event. . #womeninscience #womeninSTEM #girlsinscience #physics #STEM #science #urmstongrammar #manchester #mcr #networkingThe UK Antarctic Meteorites team have made it back to England! It's great to have Dr Katie Joy back in the department, as well as 36 new meteorites for analysis. This photo was taken by Katie on her flight home from Antarctica. The fully circular rainbow is called a glory. They are an optical phenomenon caused by sunlight refracting through tiny water droplets in clouds or mist 🌈 . #fieldwork #meteorite #meteoritehunt #rocks #spacerocks #clouds #sky #mist #rainbow #glory #colours50 years ago today the #Allende meteorite fell in Mexico. 2 tonnes was recovered, making it the largest carbonaceous chondrite meteorite on Earth. It contains abundant calcium aluminium inclusions (CAIs,), the first solids to form in our Solar System, 4.567 billion years ago! What’s more, all this happened just as planetary scientists around the world were gearing up for #Apollo11 to bring back the first rocks from the Moon later in the year - an exciting time for the subject! . #geologyrocks #meteorite #science #space #spacerocks #sample #allende #geology #meteoritefallfriday (?)It’s thin section Thursday everybody! Today’s offering is a beautiful slice of Martian (!) shergottite, NWA 7937. Shergottites are a basalt-like rock which are thought to have formed approximately 200 million years ago on the Martian crust. This sample exhibits zoned clinopyroxene poikilitically associated with small olivine crystals as well as plagioclase! Scale of these images is ~2.5mm across. (Thanks to Dr. Rhian Jones for supplying these spectacular images.) . #thinsectionthursday #geologyrocks #geology #space #spacerocks #mars #petrology #science #planetaryscienceExciting looking lab work? Absolutely! @luna_katie317 and @atomharvey visited the ESA sample curation facility a few weeks ago. A fascinating insight into the organisational and scientific challenges posed by curating a sample collection on this scale - planetary simulants and all! Simulants are important in trying to predict the way materials of known mechanical or chemical properties may behave on other planetary bodies. #geology #science #spacerocks #geologyrocks #labwork #analysis #space #planetaryscience #esa-
